A Family Friend
The Boxer is most noted for his desire for human affection and
is happiest when he is with people -- especially children,
watching protectively over their play. His short smooth coat and
handsome silhouette always receive comments from
passersby. He truly suits the need for household guardian,
attractive companion, children's playmate, and loyal friend as a
powerful dog with an intelligent and alert expression. This
personality has allowed them to succeed as couriers during
war time and as seeing-eye dogs for the blind. According to
the American Kennel Clubs Registration Statistics, the Boxer
currently ranks as one of the most popular dogs in the United
States.

A Little History
The Boxer's historical background begins in Germany. Here, a
small hunting dog with mastiff-type head and undershot bite
was used to secure a hold on bull, boar, or bear until the
hunter could arrive. He became a utility dog for peasants and
shop owners, being easy to train. In the 1880s, descendants
of this type of dog were bred to a taller, more elegant English
import, and the era of the modern Boxer had begun. Imported
to America after the first World War, his popularity really began
in the late 1930s. The breed is known for standing up on its
hind legs and batting at its opponent, appearing to box with its
front paws.

Breed Characteristics
The Boxer's official classification is in the Working Group. His
keen sense of hearing makes him an instinctive guard dog,
always alert. The Boxer is not a nervous breed and will not
bark without cause. He has judgment, and a natural sense of
distinguishing between friend and intruder. The Boxers unique
expressiveness of his face sets him apart. The skin furrowing
of the forehead and dark eyes at times seem like human
attempts to converse. He mimics the mood of his master and
can spend hours quietly lying at his feet.  Their coats can be
either fawn or brindle with or without a black mask and white
markings.  The brindle can come in reverse which gives it
more of a black look.
